Let’s Make Time for the Arts in Brevard

I have a confession to make. I’ve lived in Brevard County for 12 years and have never been to the Foosaner Art Museum or the Henegar Center. I’m not a season-ticket holder at the King Center or the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.

Until I started my research for this first column, I didn’t even know there was a textile museum on the campus of Florida Tech.

Don’t get me wrong, I attend shows at the Cocoa Village Playhouse each season and send my child to art and clay camps every summer in Cocoa Village. I stroll the Downtown Melbourne and Indialantic Art Festivals; I’ve even purchased a few pieces. I see “The Nutcracker” each December. I took art classes in high school and college. I can tell the difference between a Manet and a Monet. I do, and know, thet basics, but I could do and learn more.m tt Perhaps you’re already a patron of the arts and soak up everything the Space Coast has to offer. I hopeh so. But I’m guessing that manym of you are like me. We have admiration and respect for the arts, but when life gets hectic, as it often seems to do, it’s easy to say, “I’ll just go next time.”

An old “60 Minutes” episode comes to mind, describing the new generation of “Cafeteria Catholics” who pick and choose only the most appealing, mainstream tenets to follow. Writer Anna Quindlen revived the term on NPR recently when discussing her new book “Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake.” For many of us, it’s the same for the arts. In this cafeteria culture, we select only the most compelling, most accessible, and, let’s face it, the least-intimidating art forms. Often, it’s those events with the biggest ad in the newspaper or the most commercials on television and radio.

But like mom always told us, you won’t know what you like unless you try something new.

Here is a selection of art you can see at the Art Gallery of Viera when “Got Art?” opens at the venue with a reception Saturday, May 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is at 2261 Town Center Ave., Suite 111, at The Avenue. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Call 321- 504-4343 for details. My goal in his column is to take a bite of all the arts and entertainment options in Central and South Brevard. I’ll be profiling some of the area’s most interesting visual and performing artists and taking some of the many art classes offered around town. I’ll tell you what exhibits and performances are worth your time and money, what will make you laugh or cry, and when to leave your spouse at home and grab

a girlfriend (or guy friend) instead. I hope to make the arts a little more compelling, a little more accessible and a little less intimidating.

I’d like to think I’m off to a good start with our first cover story on the Art Gallery of Viera. Located at The Avenue Viera, it features artwork in a host of media by 28 local professional artists, including the incredible Connie Fiore, who is paralyzed by multiple sclerosis and paints with her mouth. The family friendly environment, set inside The Avenue’s stores and restaurants, has a knack for turning the casual passerby into a repeat patron. Enjoying the local arts scene doesn’t get any easier than this.

Send your ideas to floridaweeklyarts@gmail.com and let me know what galleries, classes, artists and performances you’re excited about. Let’s not wait for “next time.” ¦
